The biggest fell on the area is called Ylläs and two villages on the opposite sides of the fell are called Ylläsjärvi and Äkäslompolo. Ylläs resort has all the necessary tourist services; accommodation, skiing center, restaurants and activity services.Ylläs is the home of longest downhill runs in Finland. Villages have succeeded to preserve the original appearance despite of structures needed for tourism. Kurtakko and Teurajärvi villages, which are situated close to fell area, are beautiful places to get familiar with traditional village life.

Activities

 

Winter:

Cross country skiing

Ylläs resort is a cross country skier’s paradise. A total of 320 km of mechanically prepared trails are available and 43 km of these are illuminated.  The skiing season begins in October and lasts until May - the long season offers athletes many good opportunities to practice. Excellent and warm ski tracks, proper illumination, versatile routes and variable terrain meet the needs of all skiers. Network of cross country trails reaches all way from Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi to Kurtakko village.

 

Skiing

Ylläs resort is the home to the longest downhill runs in Finland. With 43 slopes and 21 lifts Ylläs is one of the largest resorts in Lapland. Ylläs also has two ski schools, one in both villages. The skiing schools provide slalom, cross country skiing-, telemark skiing-, off track skiing- and snowboarding lessons. Equipment can be rented either from ski centres or from some local shops.

 

Other activities

Aside from skiing and snowmobiling, Ylläs offers a wide variety of other, outdoor and indoor activities around the year. Snowmobile safaris, reindeer- and husky safaris, snowshoe and kick sleigh excursions, winter Olympics and ice-fishing are good examples about the things you can do on the area.

 

Summer:

 

Outdoor activities

In the summer-time you can enjoy the nature 24 hours a day thanks to the midnight sun. You can go for a hike on one of several nature trails lasting from 1 hour to days. You can also conquer the fells by bike. For animal-lovers there is the possibility to go horseback riding. Guided tours are arranged on Western Europe’s largest swamp-area with unique flora and fauna. In the numerous rivers and lakes of the area you can go canoeing or fishing. All equipment can be rented from the local safari-companies.

Ylläs Adventures

At wintertime snowmobile safaris and snowmobile renting, smoke sauna and winter swimming, reindeer and husky rides, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. In the summer paddling, hiking, mountainbiking and fishing. Try also traditional Finnish smoke sauna and swimming.

Trekking horses Lapland Ltd

Horse farm with friendly Icelandic horses. Give yourself a rare treat  – a relaxing ride on an Icelandic horse. Company arranges horsetreks in Lappish nature from few hours to overnight trips all year around. Horses and trips will be matched according to riders abilities. Nature


Ylläs fell area consists of seven fells. At 718 m, Ylläs fell itself is one of the highest fells in Lapland. Area is surrounded by Pallas-Ylläs nature park which consists of large areas of old forests and fell nature. In Äkäslompolo there is nature information center Kellokas, where you can get familiar with lappish nature, get nature information and maps of the area. Several marked nature trails with information boards on the way are easy to reach and wander, even for first timers.  

In Kurtakko and Teurajärvi villages,  you can see Western Europe’s largest swamp-area with its diverse flora and fauna on guided tours.There you can walk along duckboard Telatie from Kurtakko to Teurajärvi (and to Venejärvi) and get familiar with unique mire nature.

 

Events & Local heritage

 

Ylläs area has several events during the year. Ylläs fell is well-known as a “music fell”. Ylläs jazz & blues festival is held at the end of january, Ylläs soikoon- dance music festival in july, Yhtä Laulua Ylläs-song festival are held in autumn, Jokapojan Kantrit- country music festiva in july  and some more seasonal music events during the year. Art exhibitions and other occasions are held thorught the year.

 

Villages offer wide variety of service and products based on local heritage. Kurtakko village has its own Culture week in july, where under of theme  village culture  events and courses of arts and music are held. Traditional midsummer night festival is held  in june at Ylläsjärvi, The biggest fish of Ylläs- fishing competition at Äkäslompolo and Salmon fishing competitions in Kolari village, most of them in july.

Cooperative Will o´the wisp of Lapland 

Cooperatives line of business includes activities and programs for tourists, deriving from local cultural history. Eight members provide services based on local cultural tradition. Guides have been trained in the unique mire nature, its ecology, its fauna and flora. Guides are also so called “living history guides”. Tradition they have brought alive, through the means of theatre and drama we tell to the travellers of our past, the true history and the legends. We also offer handicraft activities with an idea of “do-it-yourself-a souvenier”

Internet café  Kesäkiiri, local handicraft products


Café Kesäkiiri is situated in the village of Kurtakko. While having coffee you can have a look for exposition and sale of local handicraft products; carpets, willow works, felted works out of lamb wool, paintings, herb- and berryproducts. Internet available. Cafe is also meeting point for the local people to organize common matters.

Handicrafts


Lappish handicrafts are available in Kesäkiiri, Ylläksen Viini ja Willa and some of the souvenir shops. Locally handmade products  are for example local carpets, willow works, felted works out of lamb wool, and  paintings. Woolen mittens, hats and pullovers decorated traditionally are warm and useful souvenirs. Herb- and berryproducts: sauces, syrup, juices, sweets and herbtea
 produced out of local nature are sweet things to take home as a souvenirs.

The Ylläksen Viini & Willa Ari and Tuula Ruokojärvi Vineyard and sheep farm is a place where you can buy local wines and woollen souvenirs. The shop is open weekdays 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., weekends 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., closed on holy Sundays. The farm's "Musta Lammas" ("Black Sheep") was voted wine farm wine of the year in Finland in 1999.

Atmospheric restaurant specialized in local game. Our specialities are made from Lappish foodstuff, for example:  meat of bear, willow grouse, hare, fish from Lappish lakes, tasty steaks and pizzas.
