The parish of Alegrete is in the centre of the Serra de S. Mamede, so close to neighbouring Spain. Here emerge streams and places beyond imagination. It is situated on a 500-metre-high hill between two streams, the Ribeira de Arronches, also called Alegrete, and the Ribeira de Ninho de Açor, tributaries of the River Laia.
This is the heart of the Natural Park of S. Mamede. Here, olive groves, chestnut trees and vineyards abound.
Alegrete is a town that has its origins in antiquity. Owing to its situation and to the pre-historic remains found here, and especially to the remains of Roman occupation, it is presumed that Alegrete began as a Lusitanian Castro, a fortified settlement dating from the start of the age of metals.
The Romans took it and transformed it into military base for their occupation. Through here passed Vandals, Scythians and Moors.
In 1160, King Afonso Henriques conquered the Moors, and from that time this place has never again taken.
