| Juromenha |
Juromenha fulfils the honourable position of sentinel over the River Guadiana, which runs at its feet. It was retaken from the Moors by Giraldo sem Pavor in 1167, in the service of D. Afonso Henriques. It then came under the authority of the Order of Aviz, bestowed on the order by King Sancho I. It was granted a royal charter on 15 September 1512 by D. Manuel I. Several important episodes took place in Juromenha during the Restoration War (17th century) and the Peninsular War (19th century). It was part of the diocese of Elvas until 1882, when the diocese ceased to exist. Its foundation and origins have become lost among a series of legends and traditions which go back to the Roman period. It is said that it was Julius Caesar, in 44 BC, who built its great wall and gave it the name of Julimoenia or Jurismoenia.
Legend has it that a rich Goth wanted to have love affairs but that his sister, Mégnia ou Menha, disapproved of this. Therefore, he resolved to keep her a prisoner in the castle, in order to convince her to change her mind. The young damsel kept refusing, saying: ("Jura Manha que não...") "Manha swears she will not..."One of the castle towers still bears the name of Manha today, since it is believed that it was here that she was imprisoned.
